For more than three decades, a Chanel bag’s identity lived on a small sticker inside the lining and a matching card tucked into its box. Then, in 2021, Chanel retired both. In their place: a tiny metal plaque with a chip inside that no phone can read.
That change confused a lot of buyers — and gave counterfeiters a new target. If you are buying pre-loved Chanel in Metro Manila today, you will meet both systems. So we put them head to head: what each one is, what each one proves, and which to choose.
Round by round: sticker vs. microchip
| Serial sticker | Microchip | |
|---|---|---|
| Years in use | 1986 to spring 2021 | Spring 2021 (21A) to present |
| Code format | 6 to 8 digits; series maps to years | 8-character alphanumeric, not sequential |
| Where it lives | Paper sticker on the lining; hologram from ~2000 | Metal plaque (~20 × 13 mm) stitched into the lining |
| Authenticity card | Yes, printed with the same number | None |
| Dates the bag? | Approximately, by series | Not directly; use season details |
| Readable by you? | Yes, visually | Engraving only; chip is boutique-only |
| Most-faked element | The authenticity card | The plaque — and fake “phone scans” |
| Resale watch-out | Missing card softens value slightly | A scratched, loose or replaced plaque raises questions |
Contender one: the serial sticker
From 1986, Chanel placed a serial sticker inside every bag, usually on an interior lining panel or the leather near a pocket. The same number appeared on a credit-card-style authenticity card.
- 6–7 digits (e.g. 5XXXXXX): bags made roughly 1986 to 2005.
- 8 digits (e.g. 25XXXXXX): bags made roughly 2005 to 2021.
- From around 2000, stickers carry a hologram with the CC logo and fine security cuts designed to tear if peeled.

Read a sticker in 30 seconds
- Find the sticker on the interior lining or near a pocket.
- Count the digits: seven suggests pre-2005, eight suggests 2005 to 2021.
- Read the first one or two digits and match them to the chart below.
- Check that the series fits the style’s launch year and the hardware.
- Compare every digit against the card, if present.
Serial series by year
Series windows overlap because Chanel issued numbers in blocks, not strictly by calendar year. Treat these as approximate.
| Begins with | Digits | Approx. years | Sticker notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 6–7 | 1986–1988 | White, no hologram |
| 1 | 7 | 1989–1991 | White, no hologram |
| 2 | 7 | 1991–1994 | White |
| 3 | 7 | 1994–1996 | White |
| 4 | 7 | 1996–1997 | White with logos |
| 5 | 7 | 1997–1999 | Transition toward hologram |
| 6 | 7 | 2000–2002 | Hologram era begins |
| 7–9 | 7 | 2002–2005 | Hologram |
| 10–12 | 8 | 2005–2008 | Hologram |
| 13–17 | 8 | 2009–2012 | Hologram |
| 18–22 | 8 | 2013–2016 | Hologram |
| 23–27 | 8 | 2016–2019 | Hologram |
| 28–31 | 8 | 2019–2021 | Hologram; final series |
Contender two: the microchip
Starting with the 21A collection in spring 2021, Chanel moved to an NFC microchip embedded in a small metal plaque. The plaque is engraved with the CC logo and an 8-character code, and its finish matches the bag’s hardware.
Can you scan it with your phone? No. Chanel’s chips are read only by proprietary equipment in its boutiques. And because microchip codes are not sequential, dating a chipped bag relies on season details: references on the box and dust bag, colour names, and hardware and style specifications.

If a seller proves a bag by tapping it with their phone, treat it as a red flag — not reassurance.

Which should you buy?
Choose a sticker-era bag if…
- You love discontinued colourways, older hardware finishes or vintage proportions.
- You want a bag you can date at a glance from its serial.
- The full set is intact: matching card, sticker, box and dust bag.
- You prefer a pre-loved price point against today’s rising retail.
Choose a microchipped bag if…
- You want a current-season piece in near-new condition.
- The original receipt, box and dust bag come with it.
- The plaque is intact, stitched in and cleanly engraved.
- You plan to resell later and want the newest production.
Our verdict
A sticker-era Classic Flap with its full set, independently verified. A well-kept pre-2021 flap with a matching card and sticker gives you a bag you can date, a paper trail you can check, and a price below today’s retail. Neither system proves authenticity on its own — but a complete sticker-era set gives an authenticator the most evidence to work with.
Red flags and counterfeit warnings
Sticker era
- A serial that doesn’t match the card. Every digit must match.
- A series that doesn’t fit the style. A Boy Bag, launched in 2011, cannot carry a 1990s 7-digit series.
- No hologram on a 2000s-onward bag, or a hologram that looks flat-printed.
- A sticker that peels off cleanly. Genuine stickers have security cuts and tend to tear.
Microchip era
- A plaque that is glued rather than stitched, or sits loosely.
- Shallow, blurry or uneven engraving, or a code that isn’t 8 characters.
- An authenticity card or serial sticker included with a 2022+ bag.
- A “phone scan” that returns a website.
Buying Chanel in Metro Manila
- Missing card on a sticker-era bag? Common, and not a sign of a fake. It softens resale value slightly.
- Buying a chipped bag secondhand? Ask for the original receipt if available, plus the box and dust bag.
- Reserve on Viber, verify before you pay in full. View privately, and have the bag checked by Bababebi, Zeko, LegitGrails or Entrupy.
- Keep everything. Photograph your sticker or plaque the day you buy, and never remove either.
Frequently asked questions
When did Chanel start using microchips?
With the 21A collection in spring 2021.
Do microchipped Chanel bags have authenticity cards?
No. The chip replaced both the sticker and the card.
My Chanel has no serial sticker. Is it fake?
Not necessarily. Stickers can wear away with age. It means the rest of the bag must carry more of the evidence.
What year is a Chanel with a 31 serial?
Roughly 2019 to 2021, depending on the exact number.
