There is a moment every Hermès collector knows. You lift the strap, tilt the bag toward the light, and look for a single pressed letter. That letter tells you the year your bag was born. It tells you who made it. And for a buyer spending the price of a car, it is often the first thing checked — and the most misunderstood.
Most guides stop at a year chart. This one is built like an inspection. We decode every Hermès date-letter era, show exactly where the stamp sits on a Birkin, Kelly and Constance, set authentic details beside the counterfeit tells, and explain why a perfect stamp can still sit on a fake bag.
In short
- 2026 bags carry a G with no frame; 2025 bags carry a K.
- The frame dates the era: circle 1971–1996, square 1997–2014, no frame from 2015.
- From 2016, Birkin and Kelly stamps moved to the left interior wall.
- Counterfeiters copy stamps. Authenticate the whole bag, never the letter alone.
What is a Hermès date stamp?
A Hermès date stamp is a small heat-pressed (“blind”) imprint in the leather. It has two parts: a year letter and a craftsman identification code. The year letter follows an alphabetical cycle. The craftsman code identifies the artisan and, in recent years, the atelier where the bag was made.
It is called a blind stamp because it carries no foil or colour. It is pressed into the leather by heat and pressure alone, which is why it can look faint on grained leathers like Togo and Clemence.

The four stamp eras
Hermès has used four stamp eras. The frame around the letter — or the absence of one — tells you which alphabet cycle you are in, and the era tells you what else on the bag should agree with it.
| Era | Code format | Stamp location | Hardware note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1945–1970 | Standalone letter, no frame (A = 1945) | Varies by model; often under the strap or inside the flap | Honest wear on vintage plating is expected; engravings should still read crisp. |
| 1971–1996 | Letter in a circle (A = 1971) | Under the strap or tab | The Birkin arrives in 1984 — a “1970s Birkin” is an immediate red flag. |
| 1997–2014 | Letter in a square (A = 1997, R = 2014) | Under the strap or tab on Birkin and Kelly | Lock and key numbers match; the clochette fits the key cleanly. |
| 2015–present | Standalone letter, no frame (T = 2015 → G = 2026) | From 2016: left interior wall (Birkin, Kelly); Constance: interior middle panel | A 2016+ stamp under the strap is a mismatch. |

Letters repeat. A D can mean 2000 (in a square) or 2019 (no frame). A K can mean 2007 or 2025, and a G can mean 2003 or 2026. The frame — and the craftsman code beside it — is what separates them.
Where to find the date stamp
- Birkin and Kelly, before 2016: under the strap or tab near the lock. Lift the strap and check the underside of the leather.
- Birkin and Kelly, 2016 onward: the left interior wall, near the back. Hold a phone torch at a low angle.
- Constance: the interior middle panel. Open fully; the stamp sits near the centre.
- Evelyne: inside the closure strap or tab area — often faint on Clemence.
If you cannot find it, do not panic. Grained leathers, heavy use and conditioning can soften a blind stamp. A stamp you cannot see is a reason to look closer, not proof of a fake.
Exotic leather symbols and special order marks
Beside the date stamp, Hermès may add a small stamped symbol identifying the skin. These matter because exotics sit in their own price tier.
| Symbol | Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| □ | Square | Alligator mississippiensis |
| ^ | Caret | Crocodylus porosus |
| ¨ | Two dots | Crocodylus niloticus |
| — | Dash | Nile lizard (Varanus niloticus) |
| = | Equal sign | Salvator lizard (Varanus salvator) |
| ∩ | Horseshoe | Special Order (SO) |
The horseshoe stamp marks a bag ordered through a boutique with bespoke choices, such as contrast stitching, a two-tone body or an unusual leather and hardware pairing. Special Order bags command a premium because each one is, by definition, rare.
A stamp is one data point. Real authentication weighs dozens of them together.

Inspection grid: authentic detail vs. red flag
Counterfeiters copy date stamps. A high-grade replica will carry the right letter, in the right frame, in the right place. So inspect the stamp the way professional authenticators do — alongside everything around it.
| Detail | Authentic | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp depth | A soft, even impression that sits naturally in the grain. | Too deep or too crisp for the soft leather around it. |
| Frame & era | Frame matches the year: no frame from 2015, square 1997–2014. | A 2020 Y inside a square, or a year the model didn’t exist. |
| Saddle stitching | Hand-stitched with two needles, slightly angled and tight. | Perfectly uniform, machine-flat stitches with no angle. |
| Heat stamp | “HERMÈS PARIS MADE IN FRANCE” evenly spaced and centred. | Thick letters, uneven spacing, or a font that looks slightly off. |
| Exotic symbol | Present on exotic skins, matching the scale pattern. | A symbol on calfskin, or an exotic skin with no symbol. |

Red flags and common scams
- A seller who leads with the stamp as their only proof. Genuine sellers lead with the whole bag.
- Photos that avoid the interior, stitching and hardware close-ups.
- A stamp in the wrong place for the year, e.g. a 2019 bag stamped under the strap.
- No CITES paperwork on a crocodile or alligator bag being moved across borders.
- Pressure to pay in full before a viewing or independent authentication.
- “Boutique-fresh” claims with no receipt, no full set and no seller track record.
Buying Hermès in Metro Manila
The Philippine resale market moves quickly, mostly through Instagram DMs and Viber. That speed is part of the appeal. It is also where risk hides.
- Reserve through Viber, then view in person. A reputable reseller will hold a bag on a Viber reservation and welcome a private viewing before you pay in full.
- Ask for stamp photos — then ask for more. Request daylight shots of the stamp, heat stamp, stitching, hardware engravings and corners.
- Use third-party authentication. Bababebi, Zeko, LegitGrails or Entrupy give you a second opinion beyond the seller’s word.
- Exotics need CITES awareness. Buying an exotic already in the country, with its paper trail, avoids seizure risk at customs.
- Get the guarantee in writing. Ask what happens if the bag fails an independent check.
Frequently asked questions
What letter is the 2026 Hermès date stamp?
G, with no frame.
What does the 2025 Hermès date stamp look like?
A K with no frame, beside the craftsman code.
Can a Hermès bag have no visible date stamp?
Every modern bag has one, but it can fade on grained leather. Check under low, raking light before drawing conclusions.
Does the date stamp affect resale value?
Yes. Newer stamps and Special Order bags typically command higher prices, all else equal.
